BLOOMINGTON JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATION INFORMATION
TO ALL BJHS STUDENTS AND PARENTS/GUARDIANS:
Physical education is a part of the total educational program in all grades in the Bloomington Public Schools. Students are encouraged and taught to improve their personal health, skill performance, and leadership abilities. They learn to appreciate and perform individual and group activities, which they can use and enjoy, both at present and throughout their lives. The following information should help each student have a successful and pleasant experience in health and physical education classes.
A. PHYSICAL EDUCATION PROGRAM:
1. All students will participate in physical education activity units as required by the State of Illinois. Parents are invited to visit classes at any time.
2. All students except those with medical excuses participate in Physical Fitness Testing. The tests show each student their strengths and weaknesses when it comes to personal health and physical fitness. Students are encouraged to study their individual scores and work to improve.
B. EXCUSES:
1. Students who are ill may be excused from activity with a written note from a parent/guardian for the day, and no more than three (3) consecutive school days. Frequent excuses are to be discouraged.
2. This note is to be brought to the teacher at the beginning of the class on the day to be excused. ("I forgot my excuse" is not acceptable.)
3. After three (3) days, a student who feels it necessary to continue to be excused from activity will be sent to the school nurse. The nurse may extend the excuse for one or two additional days only and send the student back to class.
4. If it is necessary for a student to be medically excused for more than three days, a doctor’s note is required, and the student will be sent to the I.M.C. throughout the medical leave.
5. Unexcused tardiness to physical education class will result in a loss of points.
C. PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASS REQUIREMENTS:
1. Students are required to dress and participate as directed for physical education activity classes. Students in locker rooms will be supervised at all times.
2. P.E. clothes are to be kept clean and neat and returned to school when needed. "My clothes are being washed," is not an acceptable excuse for not having them for class. Clothes should be taken home on Fridays after school, and returned on Monday.
3. IT IS THE STUDENT'S RESPONSIBILITY TO HAVE P.E. CLOTHES AT SCHOOL WHEN PARTICIPATING.
4. The recommended physical education uniform consists of a white t-shirt and purple shorts (preferably both with the BJHS PE logo on them). This uniform can be purchased through the Bloomington Junior High School PTO, or Reads Sporting Goods, Dick’s Sporting Goods, MC Sports, and Walmart. Order forms can be picked up in the main office or from your physical education teacher. Students may wear sweatshirts and/or sweatpants over their PE uniform when the weather is cool outside.
5. Athletic shoes must be worn and tied at all times during PE class.
6. Last names need to be clearly marked on these items. The shorts need to have the student’s last name clearly marked on the left leg, and the shirts need to have the student’s last name marked across the back. Sweatshirts and sweatpants need to be marked as well with the student’s name.
7. Classes will have approximately five (5) minutes to dress.
D. DRESSING ROOMS, LOCKERS, AND COMBINATION LOCKS:
1. Each student is assigned an individual locker for P.E. clothes. Sharing lockers is prohibited.
2. Student’s assigned to the old locker room will be required to purchase a combination lock. Locks requiring the use of a key are discouraged. Locks are to be locked at all times. The teacher will record each combination, but students are responsible for learning their own combination. Combinations should not be told to anyone except a teacher.
3. Students are not to enter or remain in the locker rooms when they are unsupervised. If tardy, a student is to go directly to the place where class is in session.
4. Purses, books, backpacks, book bags, and other items of value are not to be brought to the locker rooms. Students are responsible for their own valuables and should lock them securely in their hall lockers.
5. At the close of the class period, all lockers are to be locked securely, all scraps of other debris picked up, all personal belongings removed, and students are to wait QUIETLY in the place indicated until dismissed by the teacher.
6. Tampering with another person's locker is a serious offense, and will be referred to an Assistant Principal.
E. CONDUCT:
1. A respectful and pleasant attitude toward all adults and fellow students will do much to insure success in school. Respect the directions of all teachers, whether or not you are in their class.
2. A reasonable degree of quiet is appreciated by students and adults alike. Talk quietly in the locker rooms and halls, no shouting or screaming. Conduct becoming ladies and gentlemen is expected.
3. Obscene language, fighting, loitering, smoking, "horse play", running, pushing, or littering are not permitted in the physical education area.
4. Students will not be permitted to loiter in any of the physical education areas.
F. GRADES:
1. Physical education is a regularly required school subject and is graded on the report card in the same manner as any other subject. See the student handbook for further information.
2. Participation, skill, attitude, conduct, improvement, and completion of class requirements are considered by teachers in grading.
G. HEALTH AND SAFETY:
